Called "river of the five colors" or "liquid rainbow", the nicknames of Caño Cristales give an idea of what to expect when visiting this remote wonder of the Sierra de la Macarena National Natural Park. The extraordinary colors are due to an endemic algae that covers the riverbed every year from July to November, approximately, and fills its normally crystalline waters with that "magical realism" characteristic of Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez. 💡Curiosities Visiting Caño Cristales means sweating it out on hikes through rocky canyons. We can boat down the Guayabero River in search of animals and breathe the grassy air during excursions to viewpoints high in the mountains. Returning to the tourist center of La Macarena, the nights are filled with the lively music of the joropo bands.
